  • Added Jan NIOSH Science Blog: Going Green - Safe and Healthy Jobs
    http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/blog/nsb010410_green.html (NIOSH)
    >  In December, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored the Making Green Jobs Safe Workshop (see http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/PtD/greenjobs.html for more information and links to video). At the Workshop, NIOSH presented six ideas about the steps needed to protect both workers and the environment by making occupational (worker) safety and health concepts part of green and sustainability developments. These ideas are explained below. NIOSH invites you to respond and to add your ideas by replying to this blog.

  • Added Nov Workforce Diversity and Risk Assessment: Ensuring everyone is covered
http://osha.europa.eu/en/publications/reports/TE7809894ENC/view (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work)
    >  The main aim of this report is to describe why and how risk assessment can and should cover the whole workforce, and to increase awareness among those responsible for and aff ected by health and safety at work – employers, employees, safety reps and OSH practitioners – about the importance of assessing the risks of ALL workers. The report is aimed mainly at those who are responsible for carrying out risk assessments and/or are involved in the process.

  • "Newness" and the risk of occupational injury
    http://www.iwh.on.ca/briefings/newness (IWH)
    >  Research is emerging that “newness” is associated with a higher risk of work injury. Whether it’s young workers, workers of all ages new to their jobs, recent immigrants or employees in newly established firms, the evidence indicates that these workers face higher injury rates and/or more hazardous jobs. This Issue Briefing, prepared by the Institute for Work & Health, summarizes the key research behind these findings and explores the implications for policy-makers in governments and health and safety service providers.

  • NIOSH Safety and Health Topic: Going Green - Safe and Healthy Jobs
    http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/greenjobs/ (NIOSH)
    >  NIOSH and its partners are developing a framework to create awareness, provide guidance, and address occupational safety and health issues associated with green jobs and sustainability efforts. Keep checking back to this page for updates.

  • European Agency for Safety and Health at Work: Expert Forecast on Emerging Chemical Risks Related to Occupational Safety and Health
http://osha.europa.eu/en/publications/reports/TE3008390ENC_chemical_risks/view (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work)
    >  It is estimated that about 74,000 work-related deaths may be linked to hazardous substances at work each year in the EU – about 10 times more than workplace accidents. About 15% of European workers report handling chemical products for a quarter of their working time and 19% report breathing in dust, fumes and smoke in their workplaces. The 49 experts from 21 European countries who participated in this forecast highlighted particles and dusts as major emerging concerns and put nanoparticles at the top of the list of emerging risks. Other main groups of emerging risks identified were carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic substances, and the increasing use of allergenic and sensitising substances.
